History of Robusta Coffee Pupuan and Culture
Robusta coffee has long been planted in Pupuan District, Tabanan Regency. Coffee trees in Pupuan are planted at an altitude of between 700 and 1000 meters above sea level, along with cocoa plants which are said to give the coffee a distinctive chocolate flavor. Pupuan Robusta Coffee has been cultivated for generations
In general, farmers here manage coffee plantations of 0.5 to 1.5 hectares. In the garden there are also other plants with an intercropping system, such as chocolate, mangosteen, durian and snake fruit. In addition to implementing coffee cultivation using organic fertilizers, coffee farmers in Pupuan also implement subak. Subak is an irrigation system for irrigating rice fields or plantations that has been practiced for generations in Bali. This subak system has been proven to improve soil quality and increase production. This is related to the agreement between farmers not to use chemicals in the form of factory-made fertilizers, or chemical pesticides. Farmers in Bali do hold the principle of Tri Hita Karana which is a philosophy that focuses on efforts to maintain peace and tranquility between humans and God, humans and humans, and humans and their environment. For this reason, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, UNESCO, at its meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 20 June 2012, has designated Subak as a world cultural heritage.
